Dean Popov: Maze games - Michel Gaudet - NICE MATIN
He is in Vence the discovery made by Chave. Dean Popov, a British citizen, is already a labyrinth in himself. His mother is French and his yougoslavian father was the "famous" double agent whom Ian Fleming used as a model for his James Bond character. After a golden childhood and three months at the Arts Décoratifs in Nice, Dean Popov travels to Rome, Greece and Morocco.
(...) which leads him to exhibit at Chave's who encourages him. An exhibition where we discover with astonishment mythological giants, lions with serpentine manes, mosaic faces, and a thousand paintings in one. Color labyrinths, oriental rug cascade, arabesques.
The execution is skillful, precious, but the subjects treated here have enough breath to not collapse under the weight of their gleam. And their breath comes from "deep blue skies" and "incertain deserts where those fascinating dressed creatures float" (D de B).
A very beautiful exhibition not to be missed.
